Twenty Million

That is how many students finish Class 12 in India every year.

Twenty million families holding their breath. Twenty million dining-table conversations that stretch late into the night. Twenty million young people expected to know, at seventeen, exactly who they want to become. But that is not what strikes us most. What strikes us is how quietly it is accepted.

The midnight searches that answer nothing. The relatives who contradict each other confidently. The WhatsApp groups where everyone has a strong opinion and no one has a clear answer. The student sitting in the corner of all of it, nodding, pretending to be fine. And somehow, the expectation is that clarity will just arrive.

After speaking with hundreds of families, one thing became clear: the problem was never a shortage of information. India has no shortage of college lists, exam calendars, cutoff trackers, or rankings. There is more information available than any family could ever process.

The problem is structural.

There is no map. No process. No calm, organised way through just an avalanche of options and a deadline that doesn't move. That's not a personal failure of any parent or student. It's a gap that was simply never filled.

Next: the person this decision is actually about and how they end up being the quietest one in the room.
